President Richard M. Nixon resigned while facing impeachment for his involvement in the Watergate scandal. Other scandals he was being investigated for included obstruction of justice and conspiracy for a smear campaign against Pentagon Papers defendant Daniel Ellsberg, bribery and conspiracy regarding milk prices and the $2-million campaign pledge from milk-producing cooperatives, possible fraud regarding Nixon's gift of papers to the government and questionable tax deductions, illegal conversion of government property to personal use, using the IRS as a weapon against those Nixon saw as enemies, and more.
