It was the day after the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan which left Reagan hospitalized with a bullet wound to his left lung, press secretary James S. Brady in critical condition with a bullet wound to his brain, Secret Service agent Timothy J. McCarthy with a bullet wound to his liver, and District of Columbia policeman Thomas Delahanty wounded.

Still in shock, the nation turned to Vice President George Bush for leadership while President Reagan lay in the hospital.

Not to be defeated, however, President Reagan hearkened back to his cowboy acting days when he told his wife, Nancy, "Honey, I forgot to duck".

The news coverage shows the shock and fear and mass confusion that followed the shooting and the struggle the news media faced while trying to get accurate information.

The paper includes coverage of other major stories, including the discovery of the twenty-first murder victim in the Atlanta child murders; the end of a hostage crisis in Thailand when Indonesian troops stormed a grounded plane and rescued the hostages; and the end of a threat of a general strike in Poland; among many other stories of the day.
