Barnegat Bay Catboats were workhorse boats developed to haul timber to mills and fish and seafood to port through the shoal waters of Barnegat Bay, New Jersey.
Soon, the sailboats were being raced, causing racers to look for ways to improve the speed of the boats. In 1871, the Toms River Challenge Cup had been created along with the Toms River Yacht Club. By 1896, the heavy hauling catboats were replaced with faster models.
