In the late 1880s to the early 1900s, Mrs. E.D.E.N. Southworth was a popular Victorian romance serial novelist. In a smart marketing move, few of her novels were complete within themselves. Southworths stories usually had an open ending, forcing readers to buy the sequel novel to find out how the story ended.

The publisher insisted that each ofSouthworth's novels had a unique, specially designedcover that easilydistinguished each book from the others.
