Before cell phones, back when there was only one phone in the house (a landline), and all family members (including the teenagers!) had to share the one phone (and for those who remember party lines where more than one family in an area would share one phone line and could listen in on each other's calls!) timers often were used as peacekeepers!
Note that the phone in this wonderful timer is the old dial kind. Wonder how many teenage romances were put on hold when the sand ran out!
