Called "Minnesota chat" by Johnny Carson and referred to as "the Happy Warrior" by fellow senators, Hubert H. Humphrey spent his political career deeply committed to his beliefs and ideals.

He was known for his oratorical skills even as a young senator. When he joined the Senate in 1949, he hit the ground running by introducing several bills increasing aid to schools, expanding the Labor Department, closing corporate tax loopholes, and starting the foundation for Medicare. In 1968, he ran for president against Richard Nixon.
